Between 31 July and 6 August , there was a Magical Quill challenge, a competition in which fans had to solve a clue revealed on the main site, add the answer to the end of a special web address, and then locate the Quill on the site they are taken to. When they located the Quill, fans were taken to a registration page for Pottermore. Approximately 1 million fans were given access through this promotion about , a day.
When each day's quota was filled, the clue was removed and replaced with a message indicating that registration had closed. Anyone who managed to find the Magical Quill and register received an email with a validation link that they must have followed within 48 hours. Upon clicking the validation link, they became eligible for early access to Pottermore. They then eventually received a welcome email that allowed them to access Pottermore.

On 22 September, , the site unveiled a long-awaited feature - the ability for registered members to determine their Patronus Charm. This takes the form of a quiz of several questions, after which the member's patronus is revealed and added to their personal profile on the site. The quiz, which can only be taken once, is accompanied by graphics and sound and features a wide range of possible patronus animals.
They aim to read a Harry Potter book each month and invite people to debate each book with them online, with a new theme for the topic each week. On 12 March , Pottermore unveiled a new look which incorporated the new Wizarding World logo. Before the relaunch, the Pottermore Insider was the only thing available to every visitor besides the shop.

The Pottermore Shop is one of the features of Pottermore. The Pottermore Shop is the only place where Harry Potter eBook and digital audio books are available to purchase. In October , Enhanced Editions of the 7 books were published exclusively on iBooks by Pottermore. Enhanced editions are said to include the full original text plus illustrations, animations and interactions as well as annotations written by J.
It has all been about the platform up to now, but the content comes next. Users will be able to share their experiences and creativity as the storylines move on to subsequent books in the series in the months following opening. The site also contains links to the Pottermore shop, which opened two weeks ago, as well as new material, written by the author J K Rowling.

It stayed up until 31 July following the release of the last fews chapters of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The old Pottermore gave an interactive experience. Once an account was set up, you would begin travelling through moments. Each chapter of every book was spilt into one to four moments with one to three zoom layers. You would have to find certain things, such as clicking on a sign which would reveal some new writing or find an object to collect.
You would begin with the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and once you had found everything in one moment, you would move onto the next moment. When you reached the chapter Diagon Alley, you would receive a shopping list. You would follow the story to Gringotts to receive some coins, before being able to click on different shops including Flourish and Blotts to buy school books, Potage's Cauldron Shop and the Apothecary.
You would also pick your pet at Magical Menagerie, with the choice of an owl, cat or toad. Finally, you would visit Ollivanders to obtain a wand following a small quiz. Once you were Sorted, you would receive a House welcome message containing new information from Rowling. You could continue travelling through the moments at your own pace but everything you collected would give you some house points.
Only the first book was available to play from the beginning, but over time Pottermore released each moment from each book.
